Questions by: Mickaël
With: Rikard Wermén
- I can imagine that the entire band is very pleased with the release of The redlight murder case?
Yeah, as a matter of fact yes. The recording session went out real smooth, there weren’t any bigger hassles and the response so far from media and people one will be talking to have been really good. Some claim that it’s our best CD ever and that’s pretty good. Needless to say we have a new line up again so I guess it feels extra good for Martin and Tomas that the response is this cool.
- What are your own personal feelings about the end result?
I would say that it’s the best shit we have so far recorded with Deranged. It will be easy to top for the next time around but it’ll do so far… Mean, there are always some small shit you wish that would have been different but… Well, we’ll never do a new Reign in blood anyway. The cover artwork turned out nice as well and there’s been lots of response on that as well.
- When did you begun to work on this album?
Man… Can’t remember. You know, earlier whenever we would be working on a new CD, we would be constantly writing for a certain period of time and only do that. Not jam any older songs and so on… This time around I and Johan would only be working on the new songs once a week and that was it. Rest of the time would be jamming old songs or whatever… That was cool. Gave one time and perspective to think about the shit we had done, whether it was something good that we could keep or just rubbish.
- What have been the main changes that took place between Obscenities In B Flat, your previous album, and this one?
None really except from some small changes in the way of writing but that wasn’t like “day or night” anyway. We actually recorded both CD’s the same way. Just went in and played and that was it. You know what… I have said it lots of times before but… We’re not the kind of band that will like band meetings where we discuss in what musical direction if any we’ll take the band. We just play and if it sounds cool we’ll keep it. The same pretty much goes for our recording sessions.
- How new is the new material? Was everything written before entering the studio, any leftovers, studio jams etc.?
No, everything was written and so on… No leftovers, jams or whatever. Everything was prepared.
- Can you tell us something more about the recording process? How long did it take you lay all the tracks down and get that production it has?
We spent all in all 14 days recording, mixing and mastering the disc and that was pretty much what we needed. I can’t remember how many days the drums or whatever actually took.
- This album, like the previous ones, is relatively short. Is it totally sought-after, just not to saturate your listeners?
[Laughs] Man… I would say that it’s probably just us being fucking boring old farts as in our minds a full length is still 35-40 minutes. We're still in the vinyl days you know…
- You have entrusted once again Regain Records for the release of this new act. What happened between Listenable and you?
To make a long story short… They wanted one thing and we another when it came to pretty much everything. I still consider Listenable to be a cool label but at least if you ask me, things wasn’t working out and it felt like a dead end. After we had broke up with Listenable I pretty much just gave Regain a call and wondered if they wanted to give it a try.
- And? What pleased you to work once again with Regain better than to try working with another label?
There were a few other interested as well but… Mean, Regain is a Swedish label and it just felt like cool decision to hook up with a Swedish label. Man, they have their office like a 5 minute walk away from where I live so.
- I really like the titles you give to your songs ‘Strip nude for your killer’, ‘So sweet, so dead’, ‘Gently before she dies’, ‘The killer wore black goves’. How come the ideas for entitle your songs? Do you try each time to keep a funny side?
The whole “sha bang” with The Redlight Murder Case is based / inspired by giallo movies… You know those Italian produced very violent horror / splatter / detective movies? I’m not really a “giallo” maestro myself… Have probably watched tons more than your average movie hound but… The whole thing with those sleazy and cheap horror / detective stories just caught my mind there for awhile and needless to say, the actual titles for a lot of those movies are just so god damn cool. Mean, a movie title like “Strip nude for your killer”. How fucking cool ain’t that?
- ‘Death walks on high heels’ is my favourite one. Tell us some words on this songs.
As for the rest of the lyrics… It’s not a specific story or whatever… Just plain and simple violence. Still, a good part of violence is actually women making violence or murder towards men, instead of the opposite which usually are the case with a lot of lyrics within the genre.
- And wich is your favourite one? The one you take the more pleasure in writing it?
I would say 'Watch me when I kill'. I guess you’re not able to hear it now afterwards coz it’s a pretty straight forward track but we had some serious troubles with 'Formula for a murder'. Just couldn’t get the shit right… Kept re-writing and to be honest, to re-write something over and over isn’t a good thing as it tends to lose its grip but…
- Murder, sex, black humour… Would you be able to write love songs one day?
I’m doing so all the time. [Laughs]
- How much is important the black humour for you?
I don´t have any humour whatsoever.
- There is a week ago Mother Jones magazine's website has given a list of the 24 songs strategically used for maul military prisoners in Iraq. In the list, among Eminem and Metallica, there was Deicide with their song ‘Fuck your god’ taken from Scars of the crucifix. In my opinion I think there is nothing to be thrilled with that (in comparison with the glad of Deicide guys that have been honoured with this announce). Once again Death Metal music is considered like a moron music just good enough to offend and shock. What’s your point of view?
Just hope they’re author’s rights out of that. No, but seriously… I don’t want to be a “know it all” sucker but… To start with, what is the U.S. doing in Iraq anyway?
- What would be your reaction if you’ve been on this “Greatest list of offensive songs”?
“Yes, at least we made it”
- Ok last question: when will we be able to see you play live in Europe, because I can't wait to experience the crazyness live!
We just did a few shows down in Germany, Switzerland and Holland. As usual when it comes to touring, some shows was good and some crap. As for France… Unfortunately no plans right now. I fucking love to play down in France.
- Thanks a lot for your time and hope to see you soon! I leave the last words...
Death to posers.
