Questions by: Mickaël
With: Obsidian C (Vocals, Guitars)

- Are you satisfied by the first feedbacks? How fans and press reacts ‘til now?

The press so far has been really good and it also seems like the fans is going to enjoy this album alot. I think this album will get even better response than Armada.

- So, let’s come two years back with the release of this awesome and unexpected Armada. I think it is safe to talk about a success. But what have changed after the release of Armada?

With Armada out there we were finally able to get some touring done and has toured quite a bit in the last couple of years. I think the band is growing and there are big expectations for Kolossus. We have changed labels so now we're signed to Indie Recordings, with a license to Nuclear Blast in many territories. It's safe to say that they're taking much better care of us than our previous label.

- Did you expect for such an overwhelming response?

Well, I was hoping for it. I was very satisfied with Armada and it would be a shame if an album like that would go unnoticed in the metal scene. So I was really happy it got such good response of course.

- After all this new renown I mind the writing of new songs had to be shared with kind of pressure…

It was never any real pressure, but I thought to myself after Armada was finished that it might be hard to come up with even a better album without using 5 years on it. Hehe!! However, when I started making songs I was really relaxed because it sounded so much better than Armada already so it wasn't a problem.

- What was the mood in the rehearsal room when composing Kolossus? And then what were the main important points you’ve fixed for this album?

The atmosphere in the band has just been great all the time for the last 2 years. We're the best of friends and we all really enjoy playing in this band now. Rehearsals was great! Especially when we started to get some new songs together. Songs like ‘Ascendant’, ‘A new empire's birth’ and ‘Against the gods’ was just awesome to play.
I think overall Kolossus has even more feeling that Armada. I think that it's more "real" and organic and sounds very human. I like that kind of feeling instead of the 150% perfect production where you cut and paste so much that you could use a drum-machine instead.

- Kolossus starts as Armada ended, with the same strength and same tone…

It definitely has a lot of Armada in it, but I think it's the best parts taken to the next level.

- But if we notice it well, the atmospheres are less harsh and in the same time more epic and elaborated…

Definitely more epic.

- One can notice too more ethnic arrangements. How did you get the idea to mix it with your music? And what do you think it brings to?

I think it adds the epic feeling of the album and if you listen closely all those parts are played with blast beats earlier in the songs. I just wanted to show people how it would sound if we arranged it some other way. Again, atmosphere is the most important thing.

- Vocals parts have also changed a little with more diverse tone. In some songs I find it seems like Primordial’s one...

I only do some black vocals and chanting vocals in the song 'The Mark of Power', but I don't think there's any folk music in those chants. However, Thebon is singing with a lot more melody now than we've had before and I really like what it adds to the music. It's just been a natural progression for us.

- For myself I find Kolossus is like a territory after the war. Armada was the conquest for a new land whereas Kolossus is the protection of these new boarders and the rising of a new empire. This is a strategic image but I find it resume well what Kolossus is. Do you agree with this?

Yes, you got it about right. Kolossus opens where Armada left off. It's the aftermath and the rise of a new empire. Then the fight is taken to the next level and they are going against the gods to bring down the gods and become gods themselves.

- Is this album so close to Armada on its theme(s)? Have you been still influenced by movies?

Still influenced by movies and computer games, yes. The theme is as explained earlier.

- Tell us what you dig as themes for a Keep of Kalessin album. Because since a time I haven’t really notice in your lyrics the same addiction to satanic and antichristian themes other Black Metal bands used to write.

I'm just trying to create an atmosphere that is big and epic and I think the lyrics should be in the same vein as well. We're much more fantasy oriented than being satanic. I guess there are enough of bands with religious or political agendas out there as well so I'll just let them take care of that. Hehe!!

- What do you find interesting in ancient civilizations and history better than in modernity?

I'm not that much into history actually, I just love seeing other kind of scenery than what I see out my window. I love visual movies and stuff. And I think very visual when I'm creating music.

- Well, can you explain me why you have decided to entitle it “Kolossus”? What is hiding behind it?

I think the title is very powerful title and it looks harder to write it with a K instead of a C. And it goes much better together with Keep Of Kalessin.

- Wasn’t it a little presumptuous to entitle it like that? Imagine fans find it not so “colossus” than it should be…

I think the fans will love this title when they hear the album.

- You are one of the only bands to make trailers for the release of your albums. How did this idea come?

Like I've mentioned I've always been inspired by movies etc. so it was just natural to try and promote the albums using much of the same tools as movies as well. In today's society you don't need to rent an expensive tv-spot either so it's a great way to build anticipation.

- I know this is too early to discuss about that, but do you have already an idea on the direction which it should take?

I think the new labels and Kolossus will definately bring the band to the next level!

- Ok! So before to end this interview I think you will tell us what is to expect for the next months to come. I heard about a giant tour with Dimmu Borgir all across the US and Europe…

Yeah, we just finished this great tour with Dimmu Borgir and Behemoth in the US. It was a great success for all three bands. And especially for us ofcourse since it was our first tour overseas. Amazing that the first tour was such a big one. And the response in the crowd was amazing as well!

- That’s all for me. I will leave the last words to you.

Thanks for the interview! See you on tour!!
